Eat, Pray, Love: USA, GB, Germany

EN: I know – most of you might have already read Eat, Pray, Love for it is a #1 bestseller and a motion picture starring Julia Roberts. But there might be one or two who haven’t. And that needs to be changed…

At first I’ve seen the movie without knowing it was based on a novel. I have to admit I didn’t like the movie at first. I wasn’t ready for the message of Eat, Pray, Love back then. And let’s be honest, the movie is nothing in comparison to the book. So for those of you, who were like “oh, come on everyone knows Eat, Pray, Love”, watching the movie without reading the book doesn’t count, sorry. The book was such an inspiration. The way Elizabeth Gilbert leaves everything behind for a journey of self-discovery makes you want to do the same thing. For those of you, who haven’t got any clue what the book is about:

After the failure of her marriage Elizabeth Gilbert, who is in her 30s, decides to leave America for one year of finding herself. Her first destination is Italy. In Rome she learns how to speak the language, how to appreciate food without having a bad conscience and how to live on her own again: “Be lonely. Learn your way around loneliness […] Sit with it, for once in your life. Welcome to the human experience. But never again use another person’s body or emotions as a scratching post for your unfulfilled yearnings.” (p. 68)

She moves on to India, where she spends the next four month in an Ashram to meditate and find spiritual harmony: “You are what you think. Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions.” (139)

The last for month she lives on Bali to learn how to keep the balance.  Over there she meets a guy, who seems to threaten this new balance of hers at first, but turns out to be her soulmate: “To lose balance sometimes for love is part of living a balanced life.” (312)

Eat, Pray, Love was one of the most inspiring novels I’ve ever read in my life. There aren’t many books which had that big of an influence on my personal journey through life. It made me think a lot about what really matters and opened up a whole new world to me. So if you’re on a journey of self-discovery – and who isn’t – and you haven’t read the book yet, go and get yourself a copy and let Elizabeth Gilbert take you with her to her land of food, her land of prayers and her land of love. You won’t regret it.
